Donald Trump says Time Person of the Year title should be man of the year

Donald Trump was crowned Time’s Person of the Year for being the man to dominate the news agenda so dramatically in one year.

But the President-elect isn’t happy with that title - he wants something altogether more masculine, believing the gender neutral ‘person’ is just Time’s attempt at being - you guessed it - “politically correct”.

Mr Trump told supporters are a rally in Iowa on Thursday night: “They used to call it ‘Man of the Year’ but they can’t do that anymore so they call it person — they want to be politically correct, that’s OK."

Unlike the US election, this title was less of a surprise. Mr Trump's ability to command headlines with controversy and provocation is unmatched, and he was recognised by Time “for reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s”.

Mr Trump was announced as the winner of a list where figures are shortlisted based on the impact they had within the year, for better or worse. In a striking juxtaposition, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor who took direct action to alleviate the devastating refugee crisis, became the fourth woman to be announced as the Person of the Year last year, followed second by Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the leader of Isis and the man who was one of the direct causes of it.

Mr Trump gave an interview filled with bombast about his plans for the future, including a promise that illegal immigrants who rape or kill “are finished”. He was otherwise vague about his policies.

Trump on Immigration and Walling of Mexico

US President-elect Donald Trump has said he will deport or jail up to three million illegal migrants initially.
Those targeted would be migrants with criminal records, such as gang members and drug dealers, he told US broadcaster CBS in an interview.
There were an estimated 178,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records in the US in 2010, according to a congressional report.
Mr Trump also said his planned wall with Mexico could include fencing.
Meanwhile, the president-elect has chosen Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), as his future chief of staff, and Stephen Bannon, the head of his campaign and of the far-right website Breitbart, as chief strategist.
In his first wide-ranging interview as president-elect, Mr Trump also said:

Future Supreme Court nominees would be "pro-life" and defend the constitutional right to bear           arms

He will not seek to overturn the legalisation of same-sex marriage

He will forgo the president's $400,000 salary, taking $1 a year instead

He was "saddened" by reports of harassment of minorities and called for it to "stop"

He was "very proud" of his campaign but wished it had been "softer, nicer"

He will "think about" asking for a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton's email use
The Republican defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in Tuesday's presidential vote in a shock victory after opinion polls favoured Mrs Clinton.

He is due to take over at the White House on 20 January, when Barack Obama steps down after two terms in office.

An estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the US, many of them from Mexico, and Mr Trump made immigration and border control a key part of his campaign.

For the first time since winning the presidency, Donald Trump has put a number on how many people he plans to deport from US soil and it's a big one - two to three million.

Although he says this group comprises violent criminals, drug-dealers and gang members, to hit such a high mark would involve either casting a very wide net that covers even the smallest infractions or also deporting legal alien residents of the US with criminal convictions.

To pull this off, an expanded "deportation force" would almost certainly be necessary, but Mr Trump's advisers have spent the past few days downplaying the prospect of such an organisation.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump also has curtailed the scope of his "big, beautiful" border wall, acknowledging that it could be a fence in some areas. All of this is evidence that Mr Trump is grappling with exactly how to make his controversial immigration promises a reality.

Proposing a multi-billion-dollar wall and mass deportations is easy. Delivering, in the face of fiscal realities and opposition within one's own party, is a different matter entirely.

'The people that are criminal'
During his campaign, Mr Trump pledged to overturn amnesties introduced by President Obama, and strictly enforce immigration laws, deporting those without correct documents.

Mr Trump told CBS: "What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate."

According to The Washington Post Fact Checker, Mr Trump is likely to have got these estimates from a Department of Homeland 2013 report saying there were 1.9 million "removable criminal aliens." But that figure includes lawful residents, or those who have temporary visas, it points out.
The Migration Policy Institute, a US-based think tank, puts the number at 820,000 - but says that includes many people who have only been convicted of crossing the border illegally.

Asked about his plans for the Mexican border, Mr Trump said "a wall is more appropriate" in some parts but "there could be some fencing".

Other undocumented migrants would be assessed once the border was secured, Mr Trump added.
However, another top Republican, House Speaker Paul Ryan, said on Sunday that border security was a greater priority than mass deportation.

"We are not planning on erecting a deportation force,'' he told CNN's State of the Union programme. "I think we should put people's minds at ease."

Walling off Mexico

 Fencing already exists along parts of the US border with Mexico

The US-Mexico border is about 1,900 miles (3,100 km) long and traverses all sorts of terrain from empty, dusty desert to the lush and rugged surroundings of the Rio Grande.

It is one of the busiest borders in the world, with at least one million people using it each day, as well as 400,000 cars and 15,000 lorries, according to Mexico's El Universal newspaper.

Some 650 miles are covered already by a non-continuous series of fences, concrete slabs and other structures.

Mr Trump has previously said his wall would cover 1,000 miles and natural obstacles would take care of the rest.

Here’s Who Will Help Donald Trump Decide Who Should Lead The U.S. Government

President-elect Donald Trump revealed on Friday the people who will make up the executive committee of his transition team.

Vice President-elect Mike Pence will take over the team from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has served as chairman of the transition team since May.

Christie said in a statement he was “proud” to have led the transition team for the last few months. Christie’s approval rating dropped to an all-time low this month after two of his former aides were found guilty of all charges in the Bridgegate scandal.

Christie, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Dr. Ben Carson, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) will serve as vice chairs of the committee.

Others on the executive committee include Reps. Lou Barletta (Pa.), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Chris Collins (N.Y.), Tom Marino (Pa.) and Devin Nunes (Calif.); Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner; Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi; RNC Chairman Reince Priebus; tech billionaire Peter Thiel; GOP donor Rebekah Mercer; private investor and film producer Steven Mnuchin; Skybridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci; Trump campaign CEO Steve Bannon; and three of Trump’s children ― Donald Trump, Jr., Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump.

Trump’s transition team includes veterans who’ve worked for former Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. The team also includes lobbyists like those he campaigned against over the last year.

“The mission of our team will be clear: put together the most highly qualified group of successful leaders who will be able to implement our change agenda in Washington,” Trump said in a statement. “Together, we will begin the urgent task of rebuilding this nation ― specifically jobs, security and opportunity. This team is going to get to work immediately to Make America Great Again.”

Here Is What Donald Trump Wants To Do In His First 100 Days

At the end of October, Donald Trump spoke in Gettysburg, Pa., and released a plan for his first 100 days in office.

The plan (below) outlines three main areas of focus: cleaning up Washington, including by imposing term limits on Congress; protecting American workers; and restoring rule of law. He also laid out his plan for working with Congress to introduce 10 pieces of legislation that would repeal Obamacare, fund the construction of a wall at the Southern border (with a provision that Mexico would reimburse the U.S.), encourage infrastructure investment, rebuild military bases, promote school choice and more.

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell mostly made nice with Trump but also shot down or expressed little enthusiasm in some of his plans. On Trump's proposal to impose term limits on Congress, McConnell said, "It will not be on the agenda in the Senate." McConnell has been a long-standing opponent of term limits, as NPR's Susan Davis reports. "I would say we have term limits now — they're called elections."

McConnell also threw some cold water on Trump's infrastructure plans, calling it not a top priority.

McConnell did say repealing Obamacare is a "pretty high item on our agenda" along with comprehensive tax reform and achieving border security "in whatever way is the most effective." But he also declined to discuss the Senate's immigration agenda further.

"We look forward to working with him," McConnell said. "I think most of the things that he's likely to advocate we're going to be enthusiastically for."

Below is the 100-day plan Trump's campaign released in October, called "Donald Trump's Contract With The American Voter."

What follows is my 100-day action plan to Make America Great Again. It is a contract between myself and the American voter — and begins with restoring honesty, accountability and change to Washington

Therefore, on the first day of my term of office, my administration will immediately pursue the following six measures to clean up the corruption and special interest collusion in Washington, DC:

* FIRST, propose a Constitutional Amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress;

* SECOND, a hiring freeze on all federal employees to reduce federal workforce through attrition (exempting military, public safety, and public health);

* THIRD, a requirement that for every new federal regulation, two existing regulations must be eliminated;

* FOURTH, a 5 year-ban on White House and Congressional officials becoming lobbyists after they leave government service;

* FIFTH, a lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of a foreign government;

* SIXTH, a complete ban on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections.

On the same day, I will begin taking the following 7 actions to protect American workers:

* FIRST, I will announce my intention to renegotiate NAFTA or withdraw from the deal under Article 2205

* SECOND, I will announce our withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership

* THIRD, I will direct my Secretary of the Treasury to label China a currency manipulator

* FOURTH, I will direct the Secretary of Commerce and U.S. Trade Representative to identify all foreign trading abuses that unfairly impact American workers and direct them to use every tool under American and international law to end those abuses immediately

* FIFTH, I will lift the restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars' worth of job-producing American energy reserves, including shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal.

* SIXTH, lift the Obama-Clinton roadblocks and allow vital energy infrastructure projects, like the Keystone Pipeline, to move forward

* SEVENTH, cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to fix America's water and environmental infrastructure

Additionally, on the first day, I will take the following five actions to restore security and the constitutional rule of law:

* FIRST, cancel every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama

* SECOND, begin the process of selecting a replacement for Justice Scalia from one of the 20 judges on my list, who will uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States

* THIRD, cancel all federal funding to Sanctuary Cities

* FOURTH, begin removing the more than 2 million criminal illegal immigrants from the country and cancel visas to foreign countries that won't take them back

* FIFTH, suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur. All vetting of people coming into our country will be considered extreme vetting.

Next, I will work with Congress to introduce the following broader legislative measures and fight for their passage within the first 100 days of my Administration:

Middle Class Tax Relief And Simplification Act. An economic plan designed to grow the economy 4% per year and create at least 25 million new jobs through massive tax reduction and simplification, in combination with trade reform, regulatory relief, and lifting the restrictions on American energy. The largest tax reductions are for the middle class. A middle-class family with 2 children will get a 35% tax cut. The current number of brackets will be reduced from 7 to 3, and tax forms will likewise be greatly simplified. The business rate will be lowered from 35 to 15 percent, and the trillions of dollars of American corporate money overseas can now be brought back at a 10 percent rate.

End The Offshoring Act. Establishes tariffs to discourage companies from laying off their workers in order to relocate in other countries and ship their products back to the U.S. tax-free.

American Energy & Infrastructure Act. Leverages public-private partnerships, and private investments through tax incentives, to spur $1 trillion in infrastructure investment over 10 years. It is revenue neutral.

School Choice And Education Opportunity Act. Redirects education dollars to give parents the right to send their kid to the public, private, charter, magnet, religious or home school of their choice. Ends common core, brings education supervision to local communities. It expands vocational and technical education, and make 2 and 4-year college more affordable.

Repeal and Replace Obamacare Act. Fully repeals Obamacare and replaces it with Health Savings Accounts, the ability to purchase health insurance across state lines, and lets states manage Medicaid funds. Reforms will also include cutting the red tape at the FDA: there are over 4,000 drugs awaiting approval, and we especially want to speed the approval of life-saving medications.
Affordable Childcare and Eldercare Act. Allows Americans to deduct childcare and elder care from their taxes, incentivizes employers to provide on-side childcare services, and creates tax-free Dependent Care Savings Accounts for both young and elderly dependents, with matching contributions for low-income families.
End Illegal Immigration Act Fully-funds the construction of a wall on our southern border with the full understanding that the country Mexico will be reimbursing the United States for the full cost of such wall; establishes a 2-year mandatory minimum federal prison sentence for illegally re-entering the U.S. after a previous deportation, and a 5-year mandatory minimum for illegally re-entering for those with felony convictions, multiple misdemeanor convictions or two or more prior deportations; also reforms visa rules to enhance penalties for overstaying and to ensure open jobs are offered to American workers first.
Restoring Community Safety Act. Reduces surging crime, drugs and violence by creating a Task Force On Violent Crime and increasing funding for programs that train and assist local police; increases resources for federal law enforcement agencies and federal prosecutors to dismantle criminal gangs and put violent offenders behind bars.
Restoring National Security Act. Rebuilds our military by eliminating the defense sequester and expanding military investment; provides Veterans with the ability to receive public VA treatment or attend the private doctor of their choice; protects our vital infrastructure from cyber-attack; establishes new screening procedures for immigration to ensure those who are admitted to our country support our people and our values
Clean up Corruption in Washington Act. Enacts new ethics reforms to Drain the Swamp and reduce the corrupting influence of special interests on our politics.
On November 8th, Americans will be voting for this 100-day plan to restore prosperity to our economy, security to our communities, and honesty to our government.

This is my pledge to you.

And if we follow these steps, we will once more have a government of, by and for the people.

Donald Trump concluded his 16-month campaign for president with a message of hope to the thousands in the Rust Belt who turned out at 1 a.m. on Tuesday to see the Republican nominee deliver his final speech before the election.

Trump abandoned much of his negative messaging about Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in a final attempt to woo voters from the blue state to jump aboard his train when they vote later in the day. Michigan has bled blue in presidential elections since 1992.

The billionaire businessman focused on reminding attendees of the jobs the state has lost to outsourcing and promised to make the state into an economic powerhouse if elected president.

"After we win, I'm going to be coming back to Michigan a lot. I'm going to be coming back every time we open a new factory or a new automobile plant, and we're going to be doing a lot of expansion. I know exactly what to do folks," Trump said. "We are going to bring back the automobile industry to Michigan, bigger and better and stronger than before."

"Now we have one flawed candidate left to beat. It's going to be the very beginning of a new adventure ... it's making America great again, we're going to do it," Trump vowed. "Michigan now stands at the crossroads of history. If we win Michigan, we will win this historic election and then we will be able to do all the things that we have wanted to do."
